It has long been known that when barley straw is allowed to rot in water, it stops the growth of algae and blanket weed. When the straw is removed from the water, the algae starts to grow again.
Rotting barley straw provides a medium for the formation of a large colony of micro organisms which consume the algae. At the same time, some of the breakdown products inhibit the growth of algae.
Barley straw pouches contain pesticide free straw in a net pouch which can be suspended in the water and are especially useful in smaller ponds where a natural approach to algae is important.
